Obama on the economic crisis: This election critical to solution

September 29, 2008

Today, Barack Obama spoke a lot about the current economic crisis. He knows that we did not get into this situation accidentally but because of a broken philosophy that puts lobbyists and special interests ahead of working people. Here are some of his remarks:

"That is the choice in this election.  Because Senator McCain has followed this philosophy for twenty-six years in Washington and now he’s running to give us another four.  He’s fought against common-sense regulations for decades, he’s called for less regulation twenty times just this year, and he said in a recent interview that he thought de-regulation has actually helped grow our economy.  Senator, what economy are you talking about?

At a time when we’re putting hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars on the line, Senator McCain still wants to spend $200 billion on tax breaks for the biggest corporations in America.  He wants to give a $700,000 tax break to the average Fortune 500 CEO, but not one dime of relief to more than 100 million middle-class Americans.  He likes to talk about how he’ll take on the corporate lobbyists in Washington, but he put seven of them in charge of his campaign.  And if you think those lobbyists are working day and night to elect my opponent just to put themselves out of business, well I’ve got a bridge to sell you up in Alaska.

You see, Senator McCain just doesn’t get it – he doesn’t get that this crisis on Wall Street hit Main Street a long time ago. That’s why his first response to the greatest fiscal meltdown in generations was to say that the “fundamentals of the economy are strong,” and why he didn’t say the words “middle-class” once in an entire 90-minute debate. "

New York Times article on labor political program features Steelworkers

September 29, 2008

Steelworkers are featured prominently in today's New York Time's article about the huge push Obama is getting from labor. Here's a part of the story:

NEENAH, Wis. — When Mike Pyne and other union foot soldiers knock on doors to promote Senator Barack Obama, they often confront a tricky challenge: how to persuade union members to vote on the basis of their wallets rather than on issues like abortion, gun rights and race.

In battleground states like this one, union voters could be vital to the outcome of the election, and the labor movement has mounted a huge push on behalf of Mr. Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, built largely around the message that with unemployment rising, the financial system reeling and gasoline and food prices soaring, the nation cannot afford to have another Republican in the White House.

The labor effort appears to be making headway. Social issues have moved to the background while the economy is foremost in the minds of many voters, and Mr. Obama appears to be benefiting politically.

Washington Post: 13 Cars for McCains--and not all American

September 22, 2008

Michael D. Shear of The Washington Post writes this today about presidential candidate John McCain:

"First it was his seven houses. Now, Sen. John McCain has to explain his fleet of 13 cars.

According to a Newsweek item published online today, McCain and his wife, Cindy, own more than a dozen cars, including three electric bubble-shaped cars, called GEM's that the magazine says are popular in retirement communities.

But the ones getting him into trouble are the foreign-made cars. According to the magazine, the McCains own a Honda sedan and a Volkswagen convertible -- despite having once claimed to always buy American-made cars."

The column points out that Sen. Barack Obama has one car: a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. Read more of the Post's article here.

GOP senator: A 'stretch' to say Palin is qualified

September 18, 2008

Palin nope

Some in John McCain's own party are saying vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is not qualified. Just today news broke that Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska said it's a stretch to say the Alaska governor is qualified for the White House. Here's an exerpt from The Associated Press story:

Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel said his party's vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, lacks foreign policy experience and called it a "stretch" to say she's qualified to be president.

"She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials," Hagel said in an interview published Thursday by the Omaha World-Herald. "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything."

Could Palin lead the country if GOP presidential nominee John McCain could not?

"I think it's a stretch to, in any way, to say that she's got the experience to be president of the United States," Hagel said.

McCain insults workers with economic view, New York Times says

September 17, 2008

nyt

Today's New York Times editorializes against presidential candidate John McCain, saying his views that the economy is fundamentally sound - then his clarification that what he meant to say was he believes in American workers - are insulting.

"The economy is stressed to the breaking point by fundamental problems — in housing, finance, credit, employment, health care and the federal budget — that have been at best neglected, at worst exacerbated during the Bush years. And as a result, American workers have taken a beating," the editorial says. "In clarifying his comments, Mr. McCain lavished praise on workers, but ignored their problems. That is the real insult." Read more of the editorial here.
