On Monday, April 29, 2013 a busload of Local 1899, 50 and District 7 SOAR Chapter 34-2 members attended another UMWA rally to show support for retirees of Patriot Coal (a spin-off from Peabody Coal). We joined thousands who are all supporting the United Mine Workers Union.

USW Study Warns Public about Dangers of Hydrofluoric Acid Use in Refinery Alkylation Process to Produce Clean-Burning Gasoline
A United Steelworkers (USW) study released today-"A Risk Too Great, Hydrofluoric Acid in U.S. Refineries"-warns that refiners that use hydrofluoric acid (HF) in their alkylation process to make clean-burning gasoline do not have adequate safety systems in place and are not prepared to handle a release.

The ArcelorMittal plant in East Chicago, Ind., is one of the largest steelmaking facilities in the world, with a history that stretches back more than 100 years. Seven years after an explosion at Grupo Mexico’s Mine #8 killed 65 miners at Pasta de Conchos in San Juan de Sabinas, Coahuila, hundreds of men and women marched through Mexico City carrying 65 black caskets with the Mexican Metal and Mineworkers' Union (Los Mineros) to mark the anniversary.

USW reacts to latest federal safety citations at Honeywell
The Honeywell uranium conversion facility where USW workers remain locked out for more than one year has once again been cited for violations by a federal agency. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA) cited the plant with 17 "serious" safety violations and a $119,000.00 fine on June 22.
