One of our members had a fatal accident at around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday at Haverhill Paperboard in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The victim, Lloyd “Butch” Benjamin, 49, and a member of Local Union 204 in District 4, reportedly fell from a ladder. Kim Nibarger from the USW Health, Safety and Environment Department will be doing an investigation. Al McDougall, Coordinator of the USW Emergency Response Team (ERT) program will be assisting the family. Haverhill Paperboard is part of the Newark Group, which has USW members at 11 of its mills. We have now had 26 members killed in workplace accidents this year. ERT has also responded to 17 serious injury incidents, giving the USW a total of 42 ERT cases since January 1.
