USW Local 900 member Gary Hemmingway of Maine has been honored an an AFL-CIO Labor Leader of the Week. Hemingway polled the union members he works with to determine which issues are important to them in this election. He explains his findings: "According to those union members I've spoken with, one of the most important issues is fixing the economy. Working families are facing record rates of foreclosure, rising health care costs, and an energy crisis."
Hemingway says: "Of these challenges, it just happens to be at this point that energy has jumped to the forefront. As a result of rising energy costs, workers are being forced to purchase fewer groceries so that they are able heat their homes and drive to work. This is a sacrifice that workers are making as a result of the failed policies of the Bush administration, and it is unfair that hard working middle class families have to pay the price."
