Our nation’s economic meltdown has resulted in more than 1,600 employees of U.S. Steel’s Granite City plant to be laid off and Amsted Rail has announced the imminent layoff of more than 600 employees. These job losses are devastating to the community and area residents and local businesses are joining with millions of other people in the country calling on our government to support a vibrant manufacturing sector.
United Steelworkers and a coalition of unions and community groups in Granite City, Ill. marched with hundreds of people calling on Congress to support legislation that puts Americans back to work.
