Members of the United Steelworkers union (USW) were shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic accident involving Colgan Air/Continental Connection Flight 3407 outside Buffalo, N.Y., on Feb. 13, 2009.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and colleagues involved in this tragedy, and we offer our most sincere condolences.

The flight attendants on the flight, Donna Prisco and Matilda Quintero, were members of USW Local 9535.

The leadership of Local 9535 and the USW Emergency Response Team continue to assist the families and survivors through this difficult time. Local 9535 and the USW International are working with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the investigation.  As a party to the investigation, the union cannot comment on the accident or investigation.

Local 9535 and sister USW locals representing Pinnacle Airlines flight attendants, along with District 9 Co-director Lloyd Walters are participating in a memorial service at the site in a collaborative showing of honor, respect and solidarity.  The service will be a tribute to the fallen crew and passengers of Colgan Air/ Continental Connection Flight 3407.

Prisco, 52, a married mother of four from Randolph, N. J., had been a flight attendant for less than a year. She started with the airline in May 2008 after many years of working at home.

“She wanted to go back to work and do something for herself,” her sister, Karen Prisco, told the Newark Star-Ledger.  “She said, ‘I’d do this job for free.’ She just loved it. She was a people person.”

Quintero, 56, had also been on the job for less than a year. She became a flight attendant on May 28, 2008.

"She was an outgoing person. She was fun to be with,'' said Lisette Wanko, a mail carrier who often chatted with Quintero
