On July 15, 2009, USW member Mike Karkowski of Local 9419 was fatality injured while working at Commercial Vehicle Group in Shadyside, Ohio. Duronda Pope of the union's Emergency Response Team and Kim Nibarger of Health, Safety and the Environment assisted the local.

Also on July 15, 2009, contractor William Wilson was fatality injured while working at Crane Pro Services, a contractor for Appleton Paper in Dayton, Ohio. Pope and Nibarger are assiting the family and Local 266.

Two other USW brothers were seriously injured on the job recently.

Kevin Crawford of Local 2948 was hurt while working at Continental Carbin in Phenix City, Alabama, after falling off a ladder. Emergency Response Team district coordinator Randall Burkett assisted the family and Don Faulkner of Health, Safety and the Environment assisted the local.

Gabriel Alvarado of Local 1647 was burned in an explosion at a CITGO Refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Emergency Response Team district coordinator Rick Erpelding and Kim Nibarger are assiting the family and investigating the accident.
