Article Brief

Click here for more info on a petition encouraging President Obama to side with American tire workers.

Earlier this year, the United Steelworkers filed a major trade case to try to stop the surge of imported tires that are costing American workers their jobs, causing tire plants to close and hurting communities across our nation.

Now we need your help. Please click here to sign our petition supporting American workers.

The situation is growing more dire as each day passes. The latest government data show that tire imports from China in July surged nearly 40 percent since we filed our case. The numbers for August are even worse. President Obama needs to hear from you. Will you ask him side with American workers?

On June 18, the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that imports of Chinese passenger and light truck tires are causing market disruption to the domestic industry. On July 9, the ITC unanimously recommended along with other things, that President Obama impose increased tariffs on Chinese tires for a three-year period, beginning at 55 percent the first year, 45 percent the second year, and 35 percent the third year. Already more than 5,000 tire workers have lost their job because of the import surge, and another 3,000 jobs are at risk.

Please sign our petition demanding that President Obama side with American workers and stop the surge of imported tires. Then forward this note to your friends, family and co-workers asking them to do the same.

Thank you for all you do.
