In this episode, Leslie Marshall talks with Fred Redmond, International Vice President of Human Affairs for the United Steelworkers (USW). Redmond talked Republicans are trying to suppress voting rights under the pretense of voter fraud.
Republicans have openly stated that their major goal is to oust President Obama.
Eighteen States have enacted stringent rules since 2003 to suppress votes. Redmond commented that, “research has shown that voter fraud is very rare. Republicans have made this move under this pretense to protect their vote.”
Records show that 11 percent or 20 million people lack government issued voter identification – mostly non-white, young and the aged.
Various methods that Republicans are using to violate the rights of people include:
-
moving polling stations,
-
closing departments where id’s can be obtained,
-
redistricting and,
-
enacting laws requiring voter id.
‘This is a most serious attempt at the Voting Right Act,” said Redmond, “We are at a point in our history where we are going to be defined in 2012 by being a nation that respects people’s rights to vote or we can sit back and watch this onslaught.”
