United Steelworkers (USW) International President Leo W. Gerard responded in a letter to Peter Lee’s Sept. 10, 2011 article in Asia Times titled “U.S. Drivers Pay Steep Price for China Tire Tariff.”
Lee suggested that the primary result of the tariffs was largely a shift in import-sourcing from China to other countries and that the domestic tire industry has not benefited significantly from the tariffs. In his letter, Gerard points to some very significant evidence that Lee overlooked.
