On the Ed Schultz Show last night, Ed talked with United Steelworkers International President Leo W. Gerard about the recent Payroll Tax Cut bill passed in the House by the Republicans.
Schultz pointed out that while plan would allow for another year of tax cuts, it would also hurt the middle class by:
- Slashing the number of weeks a person could collect unemployment from 99 to 59
- Eliminating some health care funding
- Cutting federal jobs, and
- Extending a pay freeze for federal workers.
President Obama has already said that he would veto a bill that puts the burden on working families while giving a free pass to corporations and the wealthy.
When Gerard was asked if the Democrats should accept this bill he answered that they need to draw a line in the sand and make it clear that they stand for ordinary folks.
“It’s time we take the moral position, as the Bible says, of helping the least fortunate,” said Gerard. “These guys (Republicans) want to help those who are most fortunate.”
