Radio Labour interviewed United Steelworkers National Director for Canada Ken Neumann to discuss the aspects which led to the end of Rio Tinto's six-month lockout of aluminum smelter workers in Alma, Quebec.
Neumann talked about the demand by the company for concessions and how it would have affected their future bargaining power of the local and how it could have destroyed their community if they would have accepted the company’s terms.
When asked if he felt the global campaign working with other unions helped to end this campaign Neumann responded, “There is no doubt in my mind that that is the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
