CHICAGO – The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that union members, retirees and supporters will rally for a fair contract at ArcelorMittal’s North American headquarters at 8:15 a.m. (CT) on Wed., Jan. 27, 2016.
More than 13,000 workers at ArcelorMittal facilities in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Minnesota, South Carolina and Louisiana have continued to work under existing terms and conditions since contracts with the company expired on Sept. 1, 2015, and negotiations for new contracts have been slowed by management’s demands for significant concessions.
While USW negotiators have reported some progress in recent weeks, ArcelorMittal persists in demanding drastic changes to active and retiree benefits plans, including a proposal to triple the amount retirees already contribute in healthcare premiums.
Union members will carry out a variety of additional solidarity actions at the individual facilities on Wednesday and throughout the coming weeks to show management that workers remain united in opposition to company proposals that would lower the standards of living for tens of thousands of workers and retirees.
The USW represents 850,000 workers in North America employed in many industries that include metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, oil refining and the service and public sectors. For more information about steel industry negotiations, visit http://www.usw.org/steel
