From Paper to Pipe and More, USW Leading Unfair Trade Fight

The United Steelworkers in front and center in the fight against unfair trade. In fact, our union is seen as a leader in this battle.

The New York Times describes International President Leo W. Gerard this way in a recent article: "The president of the United Steelworkers, often viewed as the No. 1 scourge of free traders."

The article goes on to say, "And the leaders of the G-20 should take note: Mr. Gerard and his fellow labor leaders are just getting started."

PAPER

In September 2009, the USW filed trade case petitions jointly with three domestic companies for anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties against Chinese and Indonesian imports of certain types of coated paper that have eliminated thousands of domestic jobs.

“America’s working families see their jobs and future threatened by the predatory practices and unfair trade policies of China and Indonesia,” Gerard said. “Neither the companies nor the union will tolerate being obliterated without asking our government to investigate and enforce the rules of fair trade.”
