Hundreds Join 235A to Call on Sherwin to End Lockout

Hundreds of Local 235A members, their families and supporters spent Sunday afternoon rallying for a fair contract and an end to the year-long lockout at Sherwin Alumina.

fred-sherwinSpeakers at the rally included local 235A President Terry Howard as well as District 13 Director Ruben Garza, International Vice President Fred Redmond, State Rep. Abel Herrero, Texas AFL-CIO Legislative Director Rene Lara and former Texas AFL-CIO President Becky Moeller.

“This has been a difficult year, but your strength and solidarity, along with the support of the community, has been remarkable,” said Ruben Garza, Director of USW District 13. “Sherwin Alumina once made the claim that their workers were like family, but you don’t treat family like this.”

Sherwin has continued the lockout despite repeated offers from the local union to return to work as bargaining continues on a fair agreement.

“We work hard, and we take pride in what we do,” said Local 235A Vice President Rey Hererra. “We aren’t asking for anything other than fair treatment. We want to share in the company’s success.”

Redmond promised Local 235A the steadfast support of the international union.

“We will continue throughout our entire international union to support you and stand with you,” he said. “Your fight is our fight.”
