Where do you work and what do you do?

I work at the University of Guelph. I spent 35 years in the lab specializing in toxicology for animals. Now, I work in the union office.

Is there an interesting fact about your work or local?

During my time in the lab, I worked in toxicology, it’s like CSI investigations involving animals, which was a unique and fascinating experience.

Why is convention important?

The convention is essential for building solidarity across different districts. It’s inspiring to see the growth, the evolving guidelines, and the direction our union is heading in the coming years. It’s an uplifting experience for the entire union community.

You are member of the women’s committee in District 6. Why is the women’s committee important, and what has the union done to uplift and inspire women?

When I started, we didn’t have a Women’s Committee, so I took on the role of chair. We’ve worked with programs like Raising the Bar to better understand and address the struggles women face. These educational initiatives have been incredibly valuable and empowering.

What does the theme “All in” mean to you?

To me, “All in” means uniting everyone from all areas of our union and coming together with renewed energy and commitment. It’s all about solidarity. We leave the convention motivated to strengthen our union back home.

Why is the union important?

The union has been instrumental in securing maternity leave, equal pay for women, vacation time, and pension plans. These benefits might exist without the union, but they wouldn’t be nearly as strong or protected.
