LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Members of United Steelworkers (USW) District 12 and Local 9424 are joining workers and allies from across southern New Mexico today for the “Las Cruces for Labor” May Day event at New Mexico State University.

The gathering marks International Workers’ Day, a globally recognized celebration of workers’ struggles and achievements in the fight for dignity, equity and justice.

“On this May Day, we – the workers who build, produce and sustain our communities – stand united and proud,” said USW District 12 Director Gaylan Prescott. “We’re here to demand recognition of our collective power and to reject the grip of the billionaire class on our democracy. This is about agency over our work, our values and our future.”

The annual event in Las Cruces brings together labor union members, students and community leaders in solidarity to call for economic justice, worker rights, and resistance to corporate greed.

“This gathering is a testament to the strength and resilience of working people,” said Prescott. “We will not be silenced. We honor those who came before us by continuing their struggle – for a future without kings, billionaires or unaccountable authority.”

USW members emphasized that May Day is not only a celebration but a call to action. As workers face increasing threats from union-busting corporations and regressive policies, union members are reaffirming their commitment to organizing and mutual support.

“Our solidarity is our greatest strength,” said a statement from USW Local 9424 members. “Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we can build a world where justice and dignity are not just ideals, but realities for all.”

The USW (www.usw.org) represents 850,000 workers employed in manufacturing, metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in tech, public sector and service occupations.
