Rapid Response Info Alert: Indiana Redistricting Session Threatens Fair Elections

Indiana faces a critical moment as Governor Mike Braun considers calling a special legislative session to consider redrawing voting districts before the 2026 midterm elections. This mid-decade redistricting is unnecessary and risks weakening voters’ voices in the election process.

What is gerrymandering?

Gerrymandering is the process of redrawing voting district boundaries in a way that gives an advantage to one group over others. It can reduce competition in elections, limit voter choice for working families, and undermine the influence of certain communities. Rather than voters choosing their elected officials, gerrymandering can make it easier for elected officials to shape the voter base and election results.

Current Situation:

  • Indiana redrew its congressional maps after the 2020 census, as required by law. A second redistricting would waste taxpayer dollars instead of focusing on the real needs of Indiana residents, such as expanding healthcare, building up infrastructure, and supporting education.
  • This plan is being pushed by the Administration. Redistricting is supposed to be a fair process handled at the state level, not influenced by outside forces.

How will this impact our Members?

When district lines are drawn in a way that favors political outcomes over community representation, the result can be a loss of meaningful input for many voters. Gerrymandering makes it harder for community members to advocate for issues that matter to them, such as safe workplaces, good jobs, and strong public services.

Fair and transparent redistricting ensures that all, not just the wealthy few, have an equal voice in the democratic process. The USW will continue to advocate for a redistricting process that is open, fair, and accountable for all working families.
