PITTSBURGH — The United Steelworkers today said that the union and its members are eager to resume steelmaking and restart blast furnace operations at U.S. Steel’s Granite City Works.

USW International President David McCall said the announcement reflects the skill, efficiency and commitment of the union workforce.

“USW members have proven for generations to be among the most efficient and productive steelworkers anywhere in the world,” McCall said. “We take tremendous pride in our work, and we understand what these jobs mean for our families and for the future of our communities.”

“We look forward to seeing production return and our members doing what they do best — safely producing high-quality American steel,” McCall said.

USW District 7 Director Mike Millsap, who chairs the union’s negotiations with U.S. Steel, said the restart demonstrates the continued value of union-represented manufacturing to our national and regional economies.

“These jobs support families, strengthen local businesses and sustain entire communities,” Millsap said. “Our members have always delivered for this company and for the customers who rely on Granite City steel.”

“We’re ready to get back to production and ensure this facility continues to play a vital role in the region’s economy.”

The USW (www.usw.org) represents 850,000 workers employed in manufacturing, metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of members in tech, public sector and service occupations.
