USW 309 Membership Update 3/27/2025

Brothers and Sisters,

SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY! This must be the first priority on everyone’s minds. We’ve had several more injuries and events since the last update. It is crucial to follow procedures, and if something doesn’t seem right—STOP! If you face any resistance when stopping to ensure safety or understand procedures, contact Union Leadership immediately.

The Company is rolling out a renewed safety plan over the next few weeks, which will bring several changes. One such change is the return to the old style of pre-shift meetings we had several years ago. Additionally, the Company plans to tighten rules that have been relaxed in recent years (e.g., beards over 3 inches, hair longer than shoulder length under hard hats). Expect communications on these changes soon.

Updates on Moves
The first round of moves was announced on 3/24/2025. The bid winners have been identified, and we are waiting for a few individuals to complete the CRT. Once finalized, the Company will release the transfer list.

We recognize the excessive amount of scheduled shifts in several departments and are working with the Company to address long-term Red Card absences. Another round of moves is expected soon, and we aim to stabilize areas consistently scheduled for seven days a week.

We’ve been advocating for new CDP-M and CDP-E classes and for posting jobs for individuals who have passed all phases of Top Rate tests. Although the Company has been hesitant, discussions with upper leadership have been encouraging. We hope to see progress on this soon.

Holiday Pay Award
Several members received their holiday pay award last week. If you believe you are owed holiday pay for being called in from September 2023 through February 2025 but did not receive it, please contact your department chairs immediately. They will compile a complete list to ensure everyone receives what they’re owed.

Community Engagement
We plan to attend and sponsor several charity events. If you’d like to get involved, please contact Pam Neubert at (865) 414-8516 for upcoming opportunities.

Rain or shine, the raffle drawing will take place during the 3:30 PM meeting on May 8th. If you need tickets or want to purchase additional ones, reach out to Ronnie Amos at (865) 363-4440.

Membership Updates
We’ve welcomed several brothers from Local 309-2 (Rockwood) who’ve successfully completed their probation period, bringing this group to 15 members. Five more are expected to become eligible next week.

Upcoming Events
The next round of 5th Steps is scheduled for 5/7/2025. We are also finalizing dates for upcoming arbitration sessions.

Credit Union Program
A program at Alcoa Tenn Federal Credit Union is available. It offers 0.25% lower than your best-approved interest rate and up to 90 days of interest-only deferment in the event of a labor dispute or layoff. Visit the union hall during business hours (Thursday and Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM) for the necessary paperwork.

Please share the link to this update with anyone who hasn’t subscribed yet. It’s the best way to receive accurate information.

Thank you for all that you do! Remember, you are your brothers’ and sisters’ keeper—stay safe out there.

In Solidarity,
Nick McCarter
