Pittsburgh —The United Steelworkers (USW) District 10 today endorsed Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey’s bid for re-election, citing his strong record of support for unionized workers and those seeking to organize across the city.
“Mayor Gainey has consistently delivered for the union members and working families of our city,” said USW District 10 Director Bernie Hall, who represents nearly 50,000 Steelworkers across Pennsylvania. “During his time in office, he’s acted to protect worker safety, enforce prevailing wage law and paid sick days, negotiate fair contracts with unions, and guide young people directly into city union work and apprenticeships. USW District 10 looks forward to helping keep Mayor Gainey in office and continuing to build a city where all workers can organize, bargain collectively, and have a voice on the job.”
USW District 10 represents roughly 12,000 members in the greater Pittsburgh area, including workers at the University of Pittsburgh, Point Park University, Robert Morris University, the Kane Community Living Centers, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County court employees and more.
“We’re proud to support Mayor Gainey because he’s demonstrated time and time again that he’s a dependable ally for workers and unions across our city,” said Rich Schiavoni, president of USW Local 1088 and part-time history and political science professor at Point Park University. “Mayor Gainey has supported University of Pittsburgh staff, grads, and faculty as they organized and negotiated their first contracts, and he’s demonstrated his unwavering commitment to workers at the Post-Gazette, UPMC, Starbucks, and more throughout his time in office.”
The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
