Rapid Response Action Call: Missouri Legislature Threatens Democracy

The Missouri Legislature has launched a direct attack on our rights, our voice, and our future. At the end of the September 2025 special session, two dangerous bills were passed and sent to the Governor:

HB 1 – Gerrymandering of Missouri’s 5th Congressional District.

  • Gerrymandering redraws voting district boundaries to give one group an unfair advantage. It weakens competition in elections, limits voter choice, and undermines the power of working families. Instead of voters choosing their elected officials, gerrymandering allows politicians to choose their voters. Currently, the Representative in this seat has a strong pro-worker voting record and a 98% lifetime score with the AFL-CIO. We can’t afford to have anti-labor interests draw that Congressional seat out

HJR 3 – A direct threat to democracy.

  • This initiative would require majority approval in all eight Congressional districts before a ballot measure could pass—stripping away the tool working people used in 2018 to defeat so-called “Right-to-Work.” If approved, HJR 3 would make it nearly impossible to use ballot measures to protect our rights.

Labor Must Stand United!

The Missouri AFL-CIO is hosting a Statewide Labor Mobilization Meeting to plan a response to these unprecedented attacks and to ensure that every Local has a voice in shaping our strategy.
