Our union’s constitution calls on members to seek to eliminate discrimination and promote civil and human rights. The USW is committed to fostering an environment of equality and fair treatment for all workers, regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability or religion. Our union must reflect the diverse workforce we represent and we must be united in the fight for civil rights and equality, in the workplace and beyond.
Part of the USW’s mission is to make sure that our workplaces are free from discrimination and bias and that all members have equal access to opportunities for training, promotions and other advancements.
This fight against discrimination begins with education. Through the union’s Civil and Human Rights Department, Education Department and other avenues, the USW provides training and resources and conducts workshops aimed at fostering an inclusive culture in our industries. These initiatives enlighten and inform our members about the importance of diversity and equality and the detrimental effects of discrimination.
When workers encounter discrimination and bias on the job, the USW is prepared to defend our members’ rights. The union provides support to members who have faced discrimination at work. The USW includes a team of experts skilled in handling cases involving civil rights violations, ensuring that justice is served.
The USW also works hard to make certain employers follow fair labor practices and civil rights laws—advocating for stronger protections and more effective implementation of these laws to protect workers.
The USW’s commitment to equality goes beyond the workplace and into our communities. Union members support and participate in initiatives that promote social justice, equality and nondiscrimination and work to create a more just and equitable society. We also build alliances with other unions, civil rights organizations and advocacy groups to amplify workers’ voices on civil and human rights issues.
The USW is always working to improve and expand upon our efforts to protect members’ civil and human rights. We are committed to learning and adapting so that our approach can evolve with changing societal norms and legal frameworks. We communicate regularly with members to hear their concerns and suggestions related to equality and fairness so we can modify our strategies and activities as necessary.
Join the USW and experience the power of unity. We are proud of our diverse membership and recognize that our collective strength is magnified by our individual differences as we continue to fight for a workplace—and a world—where everyone is treated with fairness and respect.
