Retirement Security

The USW believes that a secure and dignified retirement should be a fundamental right for all workers. That’s why members never stop fighting—at the bargaining table and in the halls of government—to ensure robust retirement security and health care coverage.

Safeguarding the Future

Making sure that workers have a secure financial future after years of dedication and hard work is one of the USW’s top priorities. That’s why our members always bargain for strong retirement benefits in our contracts—and why we never stop fighting to strengthen programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Robust retirement plans are the foundation of a secure retirement. The USW negotiates strong pension plans and 401(k) options that provide financial stability for our members when they retire. We make sure our plans don’t just meet current standards but are sustainable for years to come. When industry shifts and other economic factors threaten these benefits, the USW stands firm against cuts.

We are providing a better life not just for ourselves and our families, but for generations of families. The future is bright.

Health Care Benefits in Retirement

Workers can’t have a secure retirement without affordable health care. The USW negotiates health care benefits for retired workers so that members can have access to the medical care they need without worrying about excessive costs.

In addition, our union fights for government programs like Medicare and Medicaid. We work to strengthen these programs so that they can be there for all workers when they retire, and we push for other laws that improve access and reduce health care costs for seniors.

Legislative Advocacy

The USW fights in the halls of government to protect and strengthen retirement programs, including Social Security and Medicare. We lobby at the state and federal level, often joining forces with other unions and like-minded groups for policies that protect pension funds, improve access to affordable health care, and ensure economic stability for retired workers.

Ongoing Support and Lifelong Community

USW members’ commitment to workers’ rights doesn’t end at retirement. Through programs like the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR), union members continue the fight for fair benefits, secure retirements and workers’ rights.

Retirement can be a significant transition, and maintaining a sense of community can be essential. USW members support SOAR chapters across the union that keep retired members connected to each other, providing mutual support and ongoing engagement with issues that affect their lives.
