Nicolas Lapierre

Nicolas Lapierre serves as United Steelworkers/Syndicat des Métallos District 5 Director, encompassing the province of Quebec. He previously served as Assistant to the District 5 Director from April 2023 to May 2025.

Additionally, Lapierre serves as a Vice-President of the Quebec Federation of Labour (Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec – FTQ) and as a member of the Board of Directors of the FTQ Solidarity Fund. He is also a board member of the Quebec Mining Institute.

Originally from Natashquan, in Quebec’s North Shore region, Lapierre began his union activism in 2000, as a member of USW Local 6254, when he worked at the Wabush Mining Company’s railway and port operations, now known as the Société ferroviaire et portuaire de Pointe-Noire. He served in several leadership positions in his local, and in 2009 he was hired as a USW Staff Representative.

In 2016, Lapierre was appointed USW Regional Coordinator based in Sept-Îles, servicing a vast area including Quebec’s North Shore, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie and Îles-de-la-Madeleine regions. He served as Regional Coordinator for seven years, until his appointment as Assistant to the District 5 Director in 2023. He also served on the boards of the Mining Industry Human Resources Sectoral Committee and the Joint Health and Safety Association for the Mining Sector.

Lapierre has led several major negotiations with multinationals, including ArcelorMittal and Rio Tinto. He also helped lead the USW’s successful campaign for new federal legislation, enacted in 2023, to better protect workers’ pensions during corporate bankruptcies and restructuring.
