It’s important to apply for unemployment as soon as possible, as it can sometimes takes time for the payments to be processed. Each state has specific rules, so follow the requirements where you live.

There is a network of career centers across the country that can help with the job search process. Exact services can vary from state to state and location to location, but these centers offer a wide variety of resources to aid in finding reemployment. Your local union may also be able to help alert you to job opportunities at other USW-represented locations that may become available.

Budgeting is obviously important when facing a loss in income, so it’s important to gather and assess your financial information as quickly as possible. USW members and associate members are eligible for a wide range of services like credit counseling through UnionPlus.

There are a number of healthcare options for out-of-work members to ensure your family is covered, from COBRA to the CHIP program. While COBRA can come with significant monthly payments, some USW members may be eligible for subsidy programs.

One of the scariest parts of not working is the prospect of losing one’s home. To help, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers a guide to avoid foreclosure. The non-profit Homeownership Preservation Foundation also provides a toll-free hotline (888-995-HOPE), as well as a website to guide homeowners who may be in danger of foreclosure.

State-sponsored dislocated worker programs may provide additional services, such as upskilling programs. Your employer or union may initiate these services through your state’s Dislocated Worker Unit or state Rapid Response team. (Note: This is not the same as the USW Rapid Response program.)
