American Trade Policy and Its Impact on Workers

Colorado Springs-based progressive radio host Tim Danahey and United Steelworkers (USW) International President Leo W. Gerard discuss “A U.S. Manufacturing Policy.”

They talked about the history of how our current trade policies have devolved from wise Constitutional intent to Congressional failures to uphold the Constitution and how the American worker has been short-changed.

They discussed the need for a higher minimum wage and how this results in subsidizing low-wage employers. Profits are sitting on corporate balance sheets where they are hoarding cash rather than investing. Gazillions of dollars are being held in offshore bank accounts because our tax code is full of loop holes. We have a tax system that pays to move jobs offshore and punishes corporations that are moving back.

“Multinational corporation elite and economic elite are hoarding the money for themselves,” said Gerard.
