USW Cares: USW Local 750 Women of Steel Adopts Battered Women’s Shelter for Holidays

Submitted by Dianne Babin

photo2This year for the holidays, instead of doing their annual toy drive for the children’s hospital, the Women of Steel from United Steelworkers Local 750 decided to adopt a battered women’s shelter in their community.

Donations of comforter sets, blankets, towels, toiletries, shoes, clothes, toys, food and money were collected from members and delivered to the Shelter on a couple of occasions between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In addition to the help from the members of the Local, Covey Joseph, the grandson of member Cynthia Joseph, singlehandedly collected donations and went shopping for the Shelter.  Covey delivered $400 worth of clothes, towels, and toiletries.

The WOS from Local 750 also collected money for the locked out members of Local 235A at Sherwin Alumina in Corpus Christi, Texas and not only adopted several children but also made the trip to the Local to assist with the gift distribution on December 18.

Local 750 WOS thanks to all who donated items, money and their time for these projects.  They are looking forward to 2016 and doing their part to help not only our fellow brothers and sisters in our Union but those who live and work in our communities.

This project is just one of so many that the USW's amazing members do every day to give back to our communities. If you or your local is doing good things, we want to hear about it!
