Steven Minchuk is being honored with a Jefferson Award for his impact on young burn victims’ lives – not only does he risk his own life for others with his career, but he has turned his career into an opportunity for philanthropy and fundraising.
As a firefighter in Merrillville, Ind., for 17 years, District 7’s Jefferson Award winner has witnessed firsthand the long-term trauma burn victims experience. His rare exposer to these injuries inspired him to reach out to a non-profit organization, the Hoozier Burn Camp, the only camp in the state of Indiana where youth burn survivors can attend free of charge.
For the past three years, Steven has devoted himself to raising money for the organization by organizing events such as a firefighter v. police softball tournament as well as a motorcycle ride. To Steven, the best part is making a difference in these children and teenagers’ lives, allowing them to attend a camp where they can feel and act like themselves without having to worry about their injuries.
“I was in awe and just speechless to see these children with burn injuries on their arms and legs,” Steven said. “They were so happy and playing games as if it was the greatest time of their lives.”
Steven has raised approximately $15,000 for the Hoozier Burn Camp, allowing 15 kids to attend the camp for free. Also, through his volunteerism, he has helped spread the word about the organization and has inspired many others to donate to the cause.
