USW Cares: 2017 District 10 USW Jefferson Awards Winners, John and Jimmy Beidler

When the devastating floods hit Louisiana in August 2016, brothers John and Jimmy Beidler, members of USW Local Union 10-00086 in Landsdale, Pa., didn’t waste a moment of time when it came to organizing their community to help those in need.

They knew some of the USW’s own locals got hit hard by the disaster, so they reached out to District 10 Director Bobby “Mac” McAuliffe and Local Union 1219 Next Gen Chairman Mark Simko to partner up for the cause. Because of their hard work and dedication, John and Jimmy are both this year’s District 10 Jefferson Award winners.

The Beidlers put collection barrels at every gate location of their workplace, Merck & Co. in Pennsylvania, as well as other sites around the state to gather essential supplies like clothing, hygiene products, cleaning products, mosquito repellent, diapers and more. Their goal was to fill a 26-foot truck and drive it down themselves to Baton Rouge—they did just that and more.

When John and Mark hit the road, they even picked up donations from USW members in Tennessee and Alabama along the way, and they also received help from Teamsters Local 107.

“For me, I don't like the glory, fame, or recognition,” said John. “I just love to help fellow union members as well as the community.”

Both John and Jimmy are true humanitarians who devote their time and effort out of love for their brothers and sisters. This successful and impactful project is a prime example of that.

“Personally, this experience was something that I'll never forget, and it truly demonstrates the solidarity and love that members of unions have for one another,” Jimmy said. “We really are ‘one’ and can accomplish anything when we stand together!”

Jimmy and John are involved in coutless other service projects as activists of their local's Next Generation committee, including leading an annual pet food/supply donation drive to benefit local animal shelters and participating in the local's highway clean up through the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful program.
