Health care workers honored at District 10 Conference

Two health care locals were honored for their hard work last week at the USW District 10 Conference with the D10 Achievement Award.

Desirae Beatty and Dave Claycomb accepted the award on behalf of their siblings at Kane Community Living Centers. The group, which includes 500 long-term care workers, voted unanimously to become USW members in January 2022.

Since then, they have ratified their first contract and continue to hold solidarity days to show their employer they are standing together.

Casey Mohr, unit president of Local 1940-08, also accepted one of the awards for her and her fellow workers at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. Since taking on this role, Mohr has helped increase communications and build solidarity among the membership.

They are preparing for tough bargaining session this year by keeping the members updated and educated, and passing out bargaining surveys.

“Being able to show my members some movement and change is helping to build the solidarity I feel my unit has never had,” said Mohr. “It fills my heart that we are starting to get to that point.”
