(Pittsburgh) -- From the beginning, the United Steelworkers (USW) has strongly supported the Occupy Wall Street movement for its peaceful protest of the economic and social injustice created by corporate greed and the barons of finance. We salute the courage and conviction of all the protesters around the world who are calling for family-and community-supporting jobs.

“The USW supports the ongoing presence of the Occupy Pittsburgh encampment not only because it serves as a center for free expression, but also as a reminder of the colossal crisis still facing our country and the global economy,” said USW International Vice President Fred Redmond. “While Wall Street rings in the New Year with record profits, too many families on Main Street live in fear of job losses, home foreclosures and cuts to health care and essential social services.”

“We should not deny First Amendment rights to those that represent that 99 percent, especially when those who created this economic crisis were never held accountable. Our union knows too well the devastation caused by a global economy where workers, the environment and the future are sacrificed so that a privileged one percent can make even more money.”
