PITTSBURGH (Oct. 27) – United Steelworkers (USW) International President Leo W. Gerard, issued the following statement today upon release by the White House of the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) report. Gerard was appointed by President Obama to a steering committee known as “AMP 2.0” launched to revitalize American manufacturing and create jobs.
“The AMP Steering Committee 2.0 report provides an important roadmap for harnessing technological innovation and putting it to work to enhance U.S. manufacturing. Our competitors know how important manufacturing is to their economic strength and performance.
“AMP 2.0 reflects a recognition that we need to do much more here to ensure our own success. America continues to be the world’s technology leader, but all-too-often, our best ideas are put to work in foreign factories. That has to change.
“The partnership in today’s report was a truly collaborative effort between labor, business, academia and government. It is a tribute to the problem-solving approach advocated by the Obama Administration. AMP 2.0, combined with other important policy initiatives, can help reignite growth and create real, long-lasting opportunity.”
The final AMP 2.0 titled report, Accelerating U.S. Advanced Manufacturing, is accompanied by a White House statement available at: White House AMP Announcement and Fact Sheet.
The USW represents 850,000 workers in North America employed in basic industries that include metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, glass, plus energy producers in oil refining, renewables and the service sectors. For more information: http://www.usw.org/.
