CHICAGO – The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that thousands of union members, retirees and supporters will rally at ArcelorMittal’s corporate headquarters in Burns Harbor as part of a steel industry-wide day of action for fair contracts at 3:30 p.m. (CT) on Tues., Sept. 1, 2015.
The USW will also hold a smaller rally at ArcelorMittal’s North American headquarters downtown Tuesday morning.
Labor agreements covering about 30,000 Steelworkers at ArcelorMittal and U.S. Steel facilities throughout the country are set to expire on Sept. 1, and negotiations for new contracts have been slowed by management’s demands for unfair and unnecessary concessions from employees at both companies.
In Pittsburgh, thousands of Steelworkers will rally at USW international headquarters before marching to U.S. Steel corporate headquarters. On the way, they will stop at the headquarters of Allegheny Technologies, Inc., a specialty steel company that has locked out more than 2,200 union members in six states.
The USW represents 850,000 workers in North America employed in many industries that include metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, oil refining and the service and public sectors. For more information about steel industry negotiations, visit http://www.usw.org/steel
