Manchester, N.H. – The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that the union has endorsed State Representative and former New Hampshire AFL-CIO President Mark MacKenzie for Congress to fight on behalf of working families in the First Congressional District.
USW District 4 Director John Shinn credited MacKenzie for serving working families for more than 40 years, as a firefighter and a leader within the labor movement each for 25 years and now in the state legislature.
“Mark has been a tireless, visible and vocal champion of working families for decades,” Shinn said. “His leadership was instrumental in building a bipartisan coalition to defeat the so-called ‘Right to Work’ legislation brought before the New Hampshire House early this year.”
Shinn said that MacKenzie’s record of unashamed, outspoken and ultimately effective advocacy for American workers, their families and communities is too rare in Washington, D.C., and that the USW is proud to be the first major union to endorse the campaign to put him there.
“As a nation, if we want to create good jobs, a modern energy policy, address our crumbling infrastructure and expand the middle class,” he said, “then we need to elect representatives who know how to make it happen.”
“When we stand together in solidarity and fight together in unity for policies based on fairness and justice, we cannot be defeated,” Shinn said. “Nobody running for Congress understands that better than Mark MacKenzie.”
The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, the auto supply and energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in public sector and service occupations.
