Despite efforts by Steelworkers and our allies to prevent HB 267’s passage, Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed it into law on February 14, 2025. As a refresher, HB 267 criminalizes collective bargaining for public sector workers, including teachers, firefighters, transit drivers, and other essential employees. It will take effect on July 1, 2025.

What’s next?

  • Organized labor groups in Utah are already strategizing ways to lessen the harmful impact of the new law and explore legal avenues to reverse the decision.

Despite our efforts to oppose this harmful legislation, today’s outcome is deeply disappointing. We knew from the start that this fight wouldn’t be easy, but we also knew it was crucial to stand up for the rights of public sector workers. We will continue to push back against efforts that undermine workers’ rights and fight for the fair treatment they deserve.”
