He was a single parent on public assistance and was desperate for the dignity of work and a steady income to support his family. But instead of a lifeline, his new job led to a life-altering illness —silicosis. In March 2016, he met with U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez to discuss the disease’s impact on his life.
