(Pittsburgh) — The United Steelworkers (USW) released the following statement in honor of International Women’s Day:
For too long, billionaires and the politicians they bought have sought to turn working people against each other on the basis of age, race, gender, sexual identity and other superficial distinctions to break our collective power.
Yet, in the face of corporate greed and rising economic inequality, we in the labor movement remain committed to lifting each other up regardless of our differences so that together we can demand our fair share of economic gains. As we mark International Women’s Day, our union commits to redoubling our efforts to repelling rollbacks on civil and human rights, including attacks on women as we work toward equity for all. .
This begins in our Women of Steel committees, that are so often the heart of our locals, and includes every facet of our union.
We are stronger together, and we will stand on that every day.
The USW represents 850,000 active and retired workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
