USW: Budget Bill Betrays Working Families in Favor of Corporations, Ultra-Wealthy

(Pittsburgh) United Steelworkers (USW) International President David McCall issued the following statement in response to Congress passing its budget bill:

“Republicans in both houses of Congress this week showed their true colors, passing a budget bill designed to enrich the already obscenely wealthy at the expense of the working class.

“Make no mistake, no part of this bill is about efficiency or reining in spending, and nothing in it will provide any lasting support against the spiraling costs working families face every day.

“Instead, congressional Republicans are adding more than $3 trillion to the national debt, just so that greedy corporations and the 1 percent can amass even more wealth.

“Yet this bill is not simply irresponsible; it’s also immoral, slashing health care funding, manufacturing investments and community support on which workers rely.

“In the coming days and months, Republicans will try to distract us from the cruelty they inflicted on our nation in service of their billionaire backers.

“But we won’t be fooled. And we won’t forget.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
