(Pittsburgh) – The United Steelworkers (USW) union released the following statement today from USW International President David McCall following the appointment of James Frederick as commissioner of the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry.
“James Frederick spent 25 years working with USW members and others across the United States to make sure our workplaces and communities were safer and healthier.
“He followed that important work by serving with distinction in the Biden administration as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, continuing to advocate on behalf of workers and their families.
“Simply put, I can think of no stronger champion of working families to serve the people of Virginia as commissioner of Labor and Industry. The USW congratulates Jim on his appointment. We are proud to call him a friend, and we look forward to collaborating with him to make Virginia a better place for everyone to live and work.”
The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
