(Pittsburgh) — United Steelworkers (USW) International President Leo W. Gerard issued the following statement this evening following President Obama’s State of the Union address:

“Tonight the President outlined a bold roadmap on how to continue to grow America’s economy while also expanding the benefits to more people. He rightfully took credit for what his Administration has accomplished but also made it clear how much work remains. From saving America’s auto sector from bankruptcy, to reforming our financial system to expanding access to health care, President Obama deserves enormous credit for his leadership. His address appropriately heralded those successes but his term and work are far from over.

“On taxes, education, infrastructure and other issues, President Obama identified concrete steps that he will pursue to revitalize America. He made clear that he wants to work with the Republicans when he can but will challenge them when they put partisanship ahead of our nation’s needs.

“The USW agrees with the President’s vision on the vast majority of what he outlined.   When it comes to the issue of trade, we respectfully and regrettably disagree. Simply, USW members, their families and their communities have had to pay the price for past trade deals and today’s outdated policies. The current approach, which is in need of a dramatic overhaul, fails to correct the problems of the past. America cannot afford more of the same. The fight our members wage every day is one to maintain and improve America’s standard of living.

“The USW will continue to stand by the President on the broad range of policies where there is agreement. However, when we do disagree, we will fight for a different approach that will expand production and employment here at home.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers in North America employed in many industries that include metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, oil refining and the service and public sectors.  For more information: http://www.usw.org
