PITTSBURGH — The United Steelworkers (USW) today announced its strong endorsement of Sherrod Brown as he seeks to return to the U.S. Senate to fight for Ohio’s working families.

The union said Brown’s record of promoting fair trade, strengthening retirement security and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with workers on the picket line reflects a career grounded in union values and solid results.

Brown played a central role in securing passage of the Butch Lewis Act, which protected the earned pensions of more than 1 million union members and retirees nationwide, and the law stands as a defining example of Brown’s dedication to defending the economic security of working people.

USW International President David McCall said that throughout his career, Brown has made clear that he respects and understands the dignity of work.

“Sherrod Brown has never once wavered in his commitment to working families,” McCall said. “From fighting to restore the pensions our retirees earned to demanding trade policies that safeguard American manufacturing jobs, he has consistently delivered.

“When our members have been on the picket line — whether at Libbey Glass, Sherwin-Williams or anywhere else — Sherrod has shown up. He understands what’s at stake for workers, and he fights for us,” McCall said.

USW District 1 Director Donnie Blatt said Brown’s leadership is critical as Ohio continues to rebuild its industrial manufacturing strength.

“Sherrod Brown has always put Ohio workers first,” Blatt said. “He knows that strong trade enforcement, fair labor standards and investments in domestic industry are essential to sustaining good union jobs.”

“As the stakes get higher for the future of American industry, we need champions like Sherrod in Washington,” Blatt said. “He represents the best of what public service can be, and working people across Ohio know they can count on him.”

The USW (www.usw.org) represents 850,000 workers employed in manufacturing, metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of members in tech, public sector and service occupations.
