(Pittsburgh)United Steelworkers (USW) International President David McCall issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted in favor of a resolution ending the 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods:

“The USW welcomes today’s bipartisan vote to end needless 25 percent tariffs on Canada, one of our closest economic allies. This resolution provides a pathway toward a trade strategy that emphasizes fair trade over indiscriminate tariffs.

“The USW has long supported strong trade enforcement measures to address global overcapacity, prevent dumping and uphold labor standards. But the recent tariffs on Canada are not only misdirected but harmful to workers on both sides of the border.

“The United States and Canada share a unique security relationship, forged in a joint commitment to containing trade cheaters and fostering good, community-sustaining jobs. This vote honors that relationship.

“Our union thanks Sens. Tim Kaine, Amy Klobuchar and Mark Warner for bringing this resolution forward and calls on Republican leaders in the House of Representatives to allow a swift floor vote.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
