Cathy Drummond
District 11 Director
Cathy Drummond serves as Director of USW District 11, a position she’s held since her appointment in 2023.
Drummond began her career as a coder at the Adams Clinic in Hibbing, Minn., now owned by Essentia Health. In 1998, she helped organize her workplace, the first in a string of health care clinics in Northern Minnesota and western Wisconsin to join the USW.
She was elected to the bargaining committee for the newly formed Local 9460, serving as local union vice president and unit president and ultimately local union president, representing approximately 2,400 USW members working for a variety of health care employers.
In 2004, Drummond accepted a position as USW staff, servicing members in health care, the public sector and other industries, including workers at several local newspapers. She also represented District 11 on the USW Health Care Workers Council, providing expertise on workplace violence, safe staffing, patient care and other pressing issues across the sector.
In 2019, Drummond became Assistant to the District Director.
An ardent activist, Drummond served as the District 11 Women of Steel coordinator since 2011, helping to advance educational and leadership opportunities for women. Drummond herself holds the distinction of becoming the first woman to serve as a USW District Director.
Drummond sits on the executive board of the Minnesota AFL-CIO and is active in the North East Area Labor Council. She is also a graduate of the Harvard Trade Union Program.
District 11 serves more than 34,000 members in nine Midwestern states: Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
