Struggle for Justice with ASARCO/Grupo México Reaches Capitol Hill
During the first week of February 2020, union members from each of the ASARCO locations in Arizona and Texas went to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to raise awareness about our unfair labor practice strike in the halls of Congress.
We met with more than a dozen key congressional offices, securing commitments which included following up with the government of Mexico about Grupo Mexico’s abuses of workers and the environment.
Our representatives promised to keep an eye on safety and environmental issues at ASARCO’s U.S. operations and to find ways to ensure that the new trade deal between the U.S., Mexico and Canada can be used to rein in bad actors like Asarco and Grupo Mexico.
Our delegation also had an opportunity to stand with congressional leaders in obtaining passage of the PRO Act which calls for the expansion of union rights and bans the use of permanent replacement workers in a strike.

Our members were in the Capitol for the debate and vote and helped push the legislation forward in our meetings with Congress.
We also met with the Legislation and Policy Committee of the AFL-CIO, which passed a resolution committing the labor federation to provide solidarity and press our struggle at all levels of the government.
