Honoring Martin Luther King through Volunteer Activism

mlk-antonia2United Steelworkers (USW) District 9 Civil Rights Coordinators Tommy Wright and Pocahontas Lyons along with International Vice President Fred Redmond and his wife Ann attended the Martin Luther King Conference this past January in San Antonio, Texas at the Wyndham Riverwalk Hotel. The Civil Rights March, in conjunction with the Conference, was one of the largest MLK Events to be held in the United States, with an estimated attendance of 100,000.

One day of the Conference was set aside to do volunteer work within the community. Redmond, Wright and Lyons, other USW District 9 Local Union leaders and conference attendees volunteered their time at The ARC of San Antonio.

The ARC is an organization that serves children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Brothers and sisters assembled exercise equipment and helped with various projects to assist with programs provided through ARC to people with disabilities.

The Arc of San Antonio was founded in 1954 by parents who wanted to create a network of support and services for their children with special needs.  Throughout our history, The Arc has responded to the changing needs in our community by developing programs and partnerships that address the most critical issues facing people living with disabilities.   Today, The Arc offers one of the largest continuums of services for children and adults with a broad range of developmental abilities.
