The United Steelworkers (USW) released the following statement today from USW District 4 Director John Shinn in response to Crestwood’s proposed Finger Lakes liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage project:
“The USW is pleased to announce its support of Crestwood’s proposed Finger Lakes LPG storage project. This project will create and maintain jobs, provide significant economic benefits to local communities, and help New York consumers avoid winter price spikes by increasing local storage volumes. USW District 4 has had a long and productive relationship with Crestwood’s U.S. Salt business, and after reviewing environmental, safety and technical data concerning the underground LPG storage project, we believe that Crestwood has the capacity to provide local storage services in a safe and responsible manner.
“We were also pleased the Department of Environmental Conservation recently reported that it has everything it needs to make a ruling later this year. This project has been five years in the making, and regulatory certainty is critical to attracting companies like Crestwood that are willing invest capital and create jobs in New York.
“We encourage Gov. Cuomo to fast track this project to ensure that New Yorkers, many of whom are USW members, will not be forced to overpay for propane during the winter months.”
USW District 4 represents tens of thousands of union members in New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and Puerto Rico. The USW is the largest industrial union in North America, representing workers in a range of industries including metals, mining, rubber, paper and forestry, oil refining, health care, security, hotels, and municipal governments and agencies.
