But this legislation, touted as intending to save American workers, would actually cause about 25% of all those who’ve signed up so far for Obamacare to become ineligible. What’s more, Mr. Young’s legislation would increase the federal deficit by $74 billion.
How might these things happen? The Congressional Budget Office found that 1 million would lose employer-based coverage; that more than 500,000 of these would seek coverage through Medicaid, the Children’s Health Care Program or ACA exchanges; and, sadly, that. the rest would simply remain uninsured. Since the legislation also lowers federal government penalties to businesses who don’t abide by the employer mandate, the CBO report also concluded that the deficit would increase by $74 billion over 10 years.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) needs to come up with a better title for this bill than the Save American Workers Act. And the GOP certainly should reconsider making it a keystone in their 2014 midterm campaigns.
