(Pittsburgh) – United Steelworkers (USW) International President David McCall issued the following statement today in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order attempting to strip federal workers of their collective bargaining rights:

“Collective bargaining serves as one of the most powerful tools workers have to balance the scales, maintain a voice in the workplace and hold employers accountable.

“Today’s attack on federal workers and the effort to strip hundreds of thousands of them of their collective bargaining rights is nothing less than an attempt to silence workers who have devoted their lives to serving the public.

“Federal workers keep our communities safe, from providing vital resources to veterans to promoting public health. They also serve as stewards of our tax dollars, providing an essential stopgap between cronyism and sound government.

“By lashing out at dedicated public servants, this executive order undermines our federal institutions and invites true waste, fraud and abuse.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
