Teaching Tuesdays

The Education Department is proud to present “Teaching Tuesdays” as a series of classes that USW members can attend from the comfort of their homes.

All classes are held at either 11 a.m. or 8 p.m. EST, so if you are interested in attending one of the classes please click on the time that you can attend. Sessions run for 90 minutes.

All stewards training classes will be held on the first Tuesday of each month.

We will be using Zoom to host each session. You can create a Zoom account and/or download the software here.

Aug. 12, 2025: Legal Rights & Responsibilities of a Union Steward (this class will be in Spanish)

Learn the essential roles and responsibilities of a Union steward, from representing members to understanding your rights and responsibilities under current laws.

Conozca las funciones y responsabilidades esenciales de un delegado sindical, desde representar a los miembros hasta comprender sus derechos y responsabilidades según las leyes actuales.


Aug. 19, 2025: Book Club: “A History of America in Ten Strikes”- Chapter 3,  The Eight-Hour-Day Strikes

Join the Education Department in discussing “American History in 10 Strikes” by Erik Loomis. Please join us on Tuesday, Aug. 19th, as we dive into Chapter 3, “The Eight-Hour-Day Strikes.”

The 3rd Tuesday of each month, we’ll continue to cover one chapter at a time. Get a copy from your local library, download an audiobook, buy used, or shop local and get ready to talk labor history!

Sept. 2, 2025: What Goes into a Grievance Investigation & File

We often teach steward and grievance training. but how often do we go into detail about parts of the investigation and what documents should go into the grievance file? This class will focus on all the pieces of the grievance investigation and putting together a file that will set your union advocate up for success.


Sept. 9, 2025: SteelWeb – Grievance Tracker Training

SteelWeb is a series of tools that helps you enhance certain aspects of your local operations. It’s an efficient way to maintain your local union membership list, track and organize grievances, research arbitrations, provide a website for your Local, and improve communications with your members. This course will focus mainly on the grievance tracker feature of SteelWeb.


Sept. 16, 2025: Book Club: “A History of America in Ten Strikes”- Chapter 4, The Anthracite Strike and the Progressive State

Join the Education Department in discussing “American History in 10 Strikes” by Erik Loomis. Please join us on Tuesday, Sept. 16th, as we dive into Chapter 4, “The Anthracite Strike and the Progressive State.”

Please note that due to scheduling conflicts, next month’s Book Club is being moved to the 4th Tuesday. On October 28th we’ll continue to cover one chapter at a time. Get a copy from your local library, download an audiobook, buy used, or shop local and get ready to talk labor history!

First impressions are important. Learn how to build member solidarity from day one on the job.


Oct. 14, 2025: Just Cause – How to Best Represent Members in Discipline & Discharge Situations

Just cause is used in labor arbitration to determine whether an employer has a valid reason for disciplining or terminating an employee. In this session, we will discuss the tests to meet the standard of just cause.
